Europe managed to get coronavirus cases to decrease in time for summer — but the Continent is seeing a “recent spike,” the EUs infectious disease agency warned today.

More testing accounts for some of the increase, Mike Catchpole, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)s chief scientist, wrote in a press release. But the agencys updated risk assessment attributes the bulk of the increase to relaxing containment measures.

“There is a true resurgence in cases in several countries as a result of physical distancing measures being relaxed,” the agency said, recommending that countries reinstall or reinforce various measures in a “phased, step-wise and sustainable approach.”

For countries where social distancing and proper hygiene are followed and contact tracing is in place, the risk of coronavirus spreading is “moderate,” the agency wrote. For other countries, the risk is “very high.”
