The Belgian government announced Monday new measures to halt the upward trend of coronavirus cases — with Antwerp bearing the brunt of what is feared to be the start of a second wave.
Social bubbles will be reduced to five people, down from the current 15, Prime Minister Sophie Wilmès announced following a meeting of the national security council.
Unlike the current rules, these five people need to stay the same. The new measures will come into effect on July 29 and are set to be around for at least four weeks. Group excursions are limited to 10 people.
The number of people allowed to attend events will be halved to 100 inside and 200 outside. Working from home is also being “strongly recommended,” she said. People will also have to shop alone and should not spend more than 30 minutes in a shop.
The new measures come just four days after the country increased the mandatory use of face masks and required restaurants and bars to keep the contact details of customers to aid in contact tracing. At the time, Wilmès said that the 15-person bubble could be maintained if everyone respects the rule.
