Frances Health Minister Agnès Buzyn said Sunday she will step in to run as Emmanuel Macrons party candidate for the Paris mayoral race, after the presidents prior pick stepped down amid a sexting scandal.
Buzyn will replace Benjamin Griveaux, who withdrew from the race on Friday over the publication of screenshots of sexually explicit messages, attributed to him, sent to an unidentified woman. The scandal just a month before Parisians head to the polls left the La République En Marche party in disarray, as Griveaux was one of Macrons most faithful lieutenants.
Macron himself convinced Buzyn to run, France Info reported.
“I love Paris, I know it, I was born here, I have always lived here, and I think I have a lot to bring to all those who, like me, live here every day,” she wrote in a statement to AFP. “Im going to win.”
Buzyn was appointed by LREMs national nomination committee and still has to be approved by the partys executive bureau Sunday evening, Le Monde reported. Buzyn is not expected to be immediately replaced as health minister, the newspaper added.
