Bianca Andreescu put forward another strong case for her credentials to become the new US Open champion by beating former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets.
The young Canadian has burst onto the scene in 2019 and booked her spot in the last-16 in what is her main draw debut in Flushing Meadows.
Hailing a debutant as a potential champion may seem outlandish to some but such is Andreescus quality that it will raise few eyebrows in tennis quarters.
Andreescu – who will go on to face Americas Taylor Townsend in the last-16 – possesses a rare blend of blistering power and delicate touch and continually flummoxed her Danish opponent with a tennis brain which far exceeds her 19 years.
She said on court after the win: I think I played great tennis, so did Caroline. Im really pleased with my performance. This is one of the biggest courts in tennis… this was super fun.
I think everything is just clicking with me. I have an amazing teeam around me, Ive been through a lot with injuries but taking everything Ive learnt from the last few years and bringing it into this year.
