Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has labelled new Hall of Fame member Mick Malthouse a “master manipulator” but has lauded the three-time premiership coach for success over the course of a long career.
Malthouse, who was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night, and Buckley, combined as coach and captain to take Collingwood into consecutive grand finals in 2002 and 2003 but had a much-publicised falling out amidst the famous handover arrangement between the pair which was organised in 2009.

Having retired at the end of 2007, Buckley served as an assistant coach to Malthouse through 2010 and 2011, taking over as Pies senior coach ahead of the 2012 season. But Malthouse opted not to continue with the plan for him to act as the clubs director of coaching once Buckley took the coaching reins.

Speaking on Wednesday, Buckley acknowledged that he no longer had a relationship with Malthouse, suggesting that Malthouse saw Buckley as “an enemy.”
Buckley added that hed been left by Malthouse as “one of the bodies on the side of the road” but suggested that he understood the VFL/AFL coaching games record holders mindset.
“Mick and I dont get on,” Buckley said.
“He doesnt want to know about me. I am now an enemy in his eyes. He will rewrite history to make sure that was always the case.
