Keary an Origin-type player: Cordner

NSW captain Boyd Cordner knows better than to start making sweeping State of Origin selection statements in April. But when he looks at Roosters teammate Luke Keary, he's in no doubt as to whether he's an Origin-type player. "I think he is," Cordner said. "He's got all the qualities and just his mindset. "He's tough. I've been lucky enough to play on his edge, he's a competitor. "It's hard to talk on the spot about it. But he's a tough player, he puts his body on the line for such a small player. He wants to win. He wants to do whatever he can for us to win." Cordner describes his Roosters left-edge partner as "in the picture" when it comes to his chances ahead of the June 5 series opener in Brisbane. Regardless, Keary is the name that just won't go away when it comes to Blues Origin speculation this year. Arguably the form player of the competition alongside Queensland's No.6 and this week's opposite number Cameron Munster, the 27-year-old has continued on from last year's Clive Churchill Medal winning performance. He leads the competition for try-assists with 10 and has also put on six linebreaks. And most importantly, he's shown he knows how and when to take charge. "He's been awesome," Cordner said. "I think he is at that stage in his career now where everyone knows he has the skill and the toughness. "That just comes with a lot of confidence playing alongside one of the best halves in the competition in Cooper Cronk with his knowledge too. "(Origin)'s a long way away and I'm no selector but if he keeps playing the way he is, he is going to give himself every opportunity." Keary won't enter into the Origin debate, nor will he even say if he ready for it. He knows he has incumbent halves Nathan Cleary and James Maloney in front of him, who took NSW to victory last season. Penrith are out of form but Cleary looks a lock, a halfback NSW are ready to stick with for the next decade. At five-eighth though, Maloney's spot doesn't seem so secure. "You always want to get better and I feel like since the day I got here I've always tried to get better and I feel like I have," Keary said. "I think every single player that is eligible would be lying if they said they hadn't thought about it (Origin). "But there are two really good players I respect a lot that got the job done last year." Australian Associated Press
