Just when you think the situation in Bristol cant get any worse, ESPN had a terrible month this April, reporting that it lost about 500,000 subscribers over the course of 30 days.
According to Outckick The Coverage, “the start of this spring was brutal for ESPN, costing the network 500,000 subscribers, or nearly 17,000 lost subscribers a day in the month of April. Putting that into context, this is $48 million in revenue that ESPN has lost forever. (Thats $8 a month x 500,000 lost subscribers x 12 months in a year).”
Outkick The Coverage founder Clay Travis points out that ESPN now hovers at around 86 million subscribers. Thats a pretty dramatic decline since its subscriber numbers was close to 100 million just seven years ago.
ESPN is quickly falling victim to the cord cutting movement, where former TV watchers — particularly in the millennial age bracket — drop their cable subscriptions for more economic options. Travis points out that ESPN is by far the most expensive sports channel on television. The channel costs about three times as much as most other channels and has nothing to show for it but rapidly declining ratings.
Its become abundantly clear that ESPN needs to switch up its game plan as soon as possible or the channel will lose all of its competitive edge.
