We’ve heard of sticking your legs up in the air immediately after climax, but we think we prefer this approach.

According to research from ChannelMum.com, women are eating McDonald’s chips immediately after sex to try to get pregnant – because they believe the salt content in the fries will help fertilisation happen.

To be clear, it’s not loads of women employing this method – just 3% of mums have tried the trick, and they haven’t fed back to suggest that the tip made any difference.

There’s no evidence to suggest that eating McDonald’s fries after sex would help you get pregnant, as is the case with most old wives’ tales and fertility ‘hacks’. But if women are using this as an excuse to have a delicious post-sex snack, we’re all for it.

That’s not the only trick women are trying in the hopes of making a baby.

58% of mum surveyed had put their legs in the air and pretended to ride a bicycle for at least three minutes after sex, while 37% eat dark chocolate every day, and 37% drink pineapple juice.

One in ten said that wearing socks in bed helped them become a mum (it is true that wearing socks in bed may help you orgasm, as being warm has been shown to increase the likelihood of climaxing), while others made sure not to orgasm for a week after sex (not a method we’d recommend).

What mums have tried in a bid to get pregnant:

  • Wear socks during sex and for the week after to keep your feet warm (10%)
  • Eat McDonald’s chips immediately after sex (3%)
  • Eat dark chocolate every day (37%)
  • Avoid having an orgasm for a week after sex (6%)
  • Use reverse psychology and tell yourself you don’t want a baby, then have a wild night out and forget about ‘trying’ (39%)
  • Eat pineapples and drink pineapple juice (32%)
  • Wear green and use green bedsheets (5%)
  • Pierce your nose on the left side (0.5%)
  • Don’t just put your legs in the air but ‘bicycle’ them for at least three minutes (58%)
  • Sleep in total darkness. Switch off your phones, devices and wifi (15%)
  • Do ‘dry January’ and stop drinking for a month (7%)
  • And for the men – wear frozen underwear. (1%)

These tricks are all predicted to be used today, 2 January, which is known as National Baby-Making Day. Apparently most aspiring parents will have sex on 10.36pm on Tuesday evening to try to have a September baby – which leads to 26 September the most common day to be born in the UK.

Wanting to get romantic before going back to work and having sex to cure a post-New Year hangover adds to the likelihood of couples having sex tonight.

Siobhan Freegard, founder of ChannelMum.com, said: ‘Falling pregnant isn’t always easy so couples who have been trying a while will attempt almost anything to help.

‘While there isn’t much medical science to back up these tips, our members swear they have all helped and we have hundreds of bouncing new babies to prove it.

‘As long as you have fun trying, it’s always worth giving it a go.’

Fair. We’ll be having McDonald’s after sex regardless of any desire to reproduce. It sounds like a splendid tradition.
