Containing the transmission of coronavirus to local epidemics is “no longer considered feasible,” the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control announced Thursday.
In a dire new risk assessment, it urged European health systems to shift immediately to delaying the virus spread and protecting the most vulnerable.
The risk of “severe disease” is “moderate” for the general population in the European Economic Area and U.K., the Stockholm-based infectious disease agency said, and “high” for older adults and those with chronic conditions.
“The risk of healthcare system capacity being exceeded in the EU/EEA and the UK in the coming weeks is considered high,” the ECDC said.
The risk of milder disease, and “the consequent impact on social and work-related activity, is considered high,” it said.
As of Wednesday, there are 17,413 cases around the EEA and U.K. Italy makes up 58 percent of those cases and 88 percent of the 711 deaths. However, the ECDC warned other European countries could see situations similar to those in China and Italy “in a few weeks or even days.”
