NEW DELHI: A day after putting Mumbai polices probe into the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput under the scanner, the Supreme Court on Thursday decided to scrutinise Maharashtra polices two chargesheets in the Palghar sadhu lynching case and asked the state government what action it had taken against the policemen in whose presence the lynching took place.
A petition on behalf of Juna Akhara, to which the lynched sadhus belonged, before a bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan and R S Reddy said Maharashtra police was complicit in the crime and the chargesheet would collapse during trial and all 126 accused would go scot-free. They have demanded a CBI probe into the April 16 incident in which two sadhus and their driver were lynched in the presence of policemen.
Solicitor general Tushar Mehta said, “It is too serious a matter and when allegations of police complicity in the crime are being made, the state government should have no hesitation in submitting the two chargesheets for scrutiny of the court. If there is complicity of policemen in the lynching, then it is a case for CBI probe.”
