Travelers coming to the U.K. from Spain after midnight will have to quarantine for 14 days, the British government announced Saturday.
The decision to take Spain off the so-called travel corridors list follows a spike in coronavirus cases in the country, where 2,255 new cases of the virus were reported on Friday, according to the Telegraph. Spanish officials have also warned a second wave could be imminent.
“Weve always been clear that we would act immediately to remove a country where necessary. Both our list of quarantine exemptions and the FCO travel advice are being updated to reflect these latest risk assessments,” a government spokesperson said in a statement.
“Protecting public health is our absolute priority and we have taken this decision to limit any potential spread to the UK.”
The British government is advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain.
