NEW DELHI: A coalition of 96 mayors/elected city representative, known as C40 cities, pitched for implementation of a '15-minute city' concept as part of a large Covid-19 economic recovery plan.
A 15-minute-city, also known as complete neighbourhoods, would aim to create infrastructure in such a way that all city residents are able to meet most of their needs within a short walk or bicycle ride from their homes.
The new city will have all basic amenities such as amenities, such as healthcare, schools, parks, food outlets and restaurants, essential retail and offices within a 15-minute distance. It will also aim to digitise some of its services.
The C40 group said that in order to achieve this effort must be made to create a regulatory environment that encourages inclusive zoning, mixed-use development and flexible buildings and spaces.
The list of the C40 Cities includes five Indian cities Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai.
The group of cities represents over 700 million people, one quarter of the global economy and also includes Hong Kong, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Paris, Melbourne, Medellin, Milan, Montreal, New Orleans, Rotterdam, Seattle and Seoul.
Two C40 cities, Paris and Milan, have already adopted the concept of 15-minute city as a framework for recovery.
The cities would aim to give “streets back to people”, by permanently reallocating more road space to walking and cycling, investing in city-wide walking and cycling networks and green infrastructure.
