NEW DELHI: The high-level group on health sector constituted by the 15th finance commission will meet on Thursday to review its original recommendations given in August last year in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Interestingly, though it is the government sector that has done the heavy lifting in the fight against the pandemic, one of the things the meeting will be examining is “the enhanced role of the private sector”.
According to a statement issued by the government, there was “an immediate need to reassess the requirement of health manpower (medical and paramedical) and estimated requirement of resources for 2021-22 to 2025-26 in relation to the health infrastructure gap”. The group will also be looking into the funding for these requirements including the enhanced role of the private sector.
The HLG, constituted in May 2018, is headed by AIIMS, Delhi director Randeep Guleria. Others in the group are Dr Devi Shetty of Narayana Health City, Dr Deelip Govind Mhaaisekar, vice chancellor of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Dr Naresh Trehan of Medanta City, Bhabatosh Biswas, head of the cardiothoracic surgery department in RG Kar Medical College and Prof K Srinath Reddy of the Public Health Foundation of India.
