SRINAGAR: The J&K government on Monday extended the ban on high-speed internet in Jammu & Kashmir till May 11, which leaves subscribers of various telecom companies with low-speed internet on their mobile phones across the UT.
While issuing the latest order, the UTs home department said this was necessary to combat a spurt in militant violence, launch of new outfits, and “well-founded” apprehensions of field agencies that Pakistan has enhanced recruitment of militants and raked up its infiltration attempts, all of which depend heavily on high-speed internet.
“Such restrictions have been placed in order to curb uploading, downloading, circulation of provocative videos, guard against rumourmongering, fake news, prevent the use of encrypted messaging and VOIP services for infiltration and coordinating (militant) activities, and defeat the nefarious designs from across the border to propagate (militancy),” S Kabra, principal secretary, home department, said in his order.
