BERLIN — Bavaria will become Germanys first federal state to go into full lockdown, state premier Markus Söder announced Friday.
From midnight, Bavarians will not be permitted to leave their homes without good reason. Exceptions include commuting to work, grocery shopping, visits to the doctor or pharmacy, and providing help to others.
“We are not totally locking up Bavaria, but we are shutting down public life almost completely,” Söder said at a press conference in Munich.
The lockdown will initially last two weeks, Söder added, saying that police would control whether people comply with the measures. Violations could result in “heavy fines,” Söder said, urging people to “not have parties” nor to “invite the neighborhood children.”
