European Parliament President David Sassoli tweeted Wednesday night that all trainees due to join the institution on Monday are “welcome,” after those from Northern Italy were told their contracts would be delayed due to coronavirus.
“All interns of Robert Schuman traineeships planned from March 1 will begin work and will be subject to the same requirements imposed on the staff of the European Parliament. Welcome!” Sassoli, an Italian, tweeted in his native language.
One of the trainees affected told POLITICO they had had no communication from the Parliament that its decision had been reversed.
A total of 35 applicants due to start work at the institution next week were informed on Tuesday via email that their traineeship had been postponed until October.
Tutti gli stagisti dei tirocini Robert Schuman previsti dall'1 marzo prenderanno servizio attenendosi alle stesse disposizioni previste per il personale del Parlamento europeo. Benvenuti!

The email from Parliaments directorate-general for personnel said the decision had been taken for candidates “with declared residence in China, Singapore, South Korea and Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto.”
A Parliament spokesperson told POLITICO on Wednesday afternoon that the decision was “part of its duty of care and in line with the precautionary measures for staff” regarding the virus outbreak.
