NEW DELHI: From unsung heroes to prominent artists to political leaders, as many as 141 personalities were conferred with the Padma awards this year. However, two political leaders were among the most interesting picks.
PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig and Congress veteran S C Jamir were honoured with the coveted Padma Bhushan.
Jamir, who was a five-time chief minister of Nagaland, has been a strident critic of the BJP government in the past. He was recognized for his decades of contribution to the nation.
Baig has been critical of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti after she took over the reins of the party and formed an alliance government with the BJP. He was awarded for his contribution to "public affairs".
The Padma Awards 2020 also continued the tradition, started by the Modi government a few years ago, of honouring “unsung” heroes who have been silently contributing to social, cultural, educational and environmental fields.
