Major package for Kashmir soon: Naqvi

SRINAGAR: Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Tuesday said the Centre would soon announce a massive developmental package for Kashmir Valley and assured that a large chunk of the central scholarship scheme would be given to the students of the newly formed Union Territory of J&K. Naqvi, who is part of a 36-member delegation of Union ministers touring the UT in a major outreach initiative, said this soon after his arrival here.
In the past 70 years, all politicians looted the resources of J&K and played with the emotions of people on some pretext or the other, he said at a function in Harwan on the outskirts of Srinagar.
Naqvi said for the past 70 years, J&K, especially Kashmir, had been the victim of political corruption and governance in the erstwhile state was always hijacked by a particular set of people.
“Nobody can now play with the emotions of people of Kashmir. Elaborating on the scholarship scheme, the Union minority affairs minister said J&K would get its full share. “We have a plan to cover one crore students across the country under the scholarship scheme and J&K will get a large share out of it. So far we have received 80,000 applications from J&K students. I urge all the children, including those studying in Class I, to submit scholarship forms. In the next five years, we have decided to cover 10 lakh children from J&K alone,” Naqvi said.
Regarding the Haj quota this year, Naqvi said the government would try to accommodate all Haj aspirants from J&K.
