NEW DELHI: Suicide by farmers and agricultural labourers registered a modest decline in 2018 and was lowest in the past three years. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 10,349 people in the farming sector – 5,763 farmers/ cultivators and 4,586 agricultural labourers -committed suicide during 2018 as compared to 10,655 people during the previous year.
In 2016, the number was significantly higher at 11,379. Like in 2017, the home ministry did not specify the reason of farmers and agriculture labourers committing suicide.
The report said many states and Union Territories have reported "nil" data on suicides by farmers, cultivators and farm labourers. These include West Bengal, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Goa, Chandigarh, Daman and Diu, Delhi, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.
