SRINAGAR: A row has erupted between the J&K UT administration and the Centaur Lake View Hotel over chargeable tariff per day per room for lodging 33 political detainees and some security personnel for 3 months at the scenic hotel overlooking the Dal Lake in the city.
The Srinagar district magistrate had declared the hotel as sub-jail for detaining the political prisoners after the special status of the then J&K state was revoked by the Centre on August 5.
Under the statute, a government may declare any space or location as sub-jail for lodging detainees and the rentals are then determined as per the rules of the jail manual of that jurisdiction.
The Centaur hotel has raised a bill of over Rs 2.7 crore for 44 rooms, occupied by the political detainees and the security personnel for over 3 months, sources in the government said.
This works out to an average of Rs 6,800 per room per day. However, the UT authorities have decided to pay between Rs 700 and Rs 800 for each room per day to the hotel, as per the jail manual, the sources said.
