The centurions with work to do
Both Matthew Wade and Steve Smith whacked hundreds in Birmingham and will need to occupy the crease for a while now if Australia is to stay in the contest.
Woakes drops short and Smith pulls for four, his first boundary of the day. England's plan looks to be about a sixth stump line for Smith. They hoping he is the first to flinch but one gets the feeling Smith will eventually wear them down and make England bowl to him. Lunch is in about 30 minutes.
Australia 4/75 from 32 overs.
Head gone!
Stuart Broad is adamant he has Travis Head trapped in front from around the wicket. Head is very deep in his crease and has been hit flush on the pads.
It's hitting two thirds up middle stump, that is absolutely plumb. Stinker of a decision from Aleem Dar that has been rightfully overturned.
Australia in a lot of strife with Head now trudging back with seven runs to his name off 21 balls. Australia 4/71

Smith and Head consolidate
Smith doesn't look flustered, while Head could barely hit one out of the middle before punching Woakes through the covers for four. That breaks the shackles.
Stuart Broad comes back into the attack having already taken 1/20 off eight overs.
England have set up a pretty conventional field to Smith but want to entice him to hit through the off side. Intriguing battle going on. Australia 3/71
Meanwhile… Bairstow seems to be OK behind the stumps after that knock to the thumb but Mark Waugh reckons there's no point him sticking it out.
Ouch
Jonny Bairstow cops a nasty blow on the right thumb. He doesn't glove it properly and it's a result of the seam standing up once it went past Head. Tough conditions to keep in. Bairstow won't want to take the glove off but it appears he's getting some medical attention. He's a tough cookie and you'd expect him to keep playing. A few bandages and he's right but I can guarantee it'll be giving him grief for the rest of the day. Drinks are served. Australia 3/61
Gripping period of play
There's a little bit of hesitation and Smith sprints back to the bowler's end. Right … Smith vs Archer.
A ball into Smith's rib cage is navigated around the corner for a single. Anti-climax.
Is Travis Head any danger of getting forward? The youngster is reticent to get on the front stool and with these two nipping the ball around that is fraught with danger.
And Khawaja gone! Drama!
Khawaja nicks off to Woakes. Australia lose two wickets in four balls. Smith and Travis Head now at the crease without a run to their name yet.
As the old saying goes, one brings two. And guess one. Two brings three!
Australia still trail by 198 runs and have a lot of work to do. Australia 2/60

Bancroft gone!
After a thorough examination, Archer all but blows Bancroft's front pad off. The Aussie opener reviews it but doesn't look super confident. Ball tracking says it is hitting in line and the ball would have hit the top of middle, albeit an 'umpire's call'. Had Aleem Dar not given that out, Bancroft would still be at the crease. Funny game.
If we're taking a walk down Fair Dinkum Avenue, Bancroft never looked super comfortable at the crease. He departs for 13 off 66 balls. Australia 2-60
