Carlton football director Chris Judd has admitted that he must improve as a member of the media after his controversial "training wheels" comment regarding the club's next coach.
Speaking on Footy Classified, the Blues legend denied that he was "rattled" by the furore following last week's comments, which were widely interpreted as him ruling caretaker David Teague out of the running for the club's vacant senior coaching position, but admitted he was surprised at the outcome.
"I need to improve my media performances," Judd said.
"To continue on a show like this, where it is filmed with three more experienced media performers than me, I really have got to be a more accomplished media performer, or decide that it's not the right space for me to be.

"At the end of the day, I'm juggling with some dual roles, and especially being on this show which specialises in some 'got you' type moments, there's some challenges there, so I've got to be more precise with the words I use to avoid these headlines in future.
"I think the analogy is fine. It wasn't as if I said it regarding David Teague, I didn't, but I could have been clearer in specifying that on the night."
After realising his comments were misconstrued, Judd said that he spoke directly to Teague.
"I was really surprised," he said.
"I rang him just to clarify that I didn't say what was reported. At the end of the day I was frustrated with myself because I wasn't precise enough with my language.
"In hindsight, it was (a poor choice of words) because it created some unwanted headlines."
Judd reiterated that while the club was looking for an experienced coach, that experience did not necessarily have to be as a senior coach at AFL level.
"I said on this show that the next coach of Carlton would not have training wheels on and they'll have enough experience," he said.
"I didn't specify senior coaching experience for that to be the case. It was no different to [Carlton CEO] Cain Liddle at Brendon Bolton's press conference saying the next coach needs to be able to get their feet under the desk from day one and take us to the next level.
