‘We travel well’: Collingwood looks beyond the West Coast win

Perth: Many who dont support Collingwood scoff when the fixtures are released annually with a perception that the Magpies arent made to travel out of Victoria as much as other sides.

In 2019, there would be some teams thankful that the Magpies arent visiting.

Their one-point win over West Coast at Optus Stadium on Friday night kept their unbeaten record across their home border this season intact.

Collingwood became the second team to knock the Eagles off in Perth this year (Port Adelaide also did it) and are the only team to beat the surging Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.

They also overcame a slow start and six goals from Sydneys Sam Reid, to beat the Swans at the SCG in Round 10.

Magpies ruckman Brodie Grundy believes there is strength within the side this year that they dont get caught up in each weeks wins and losses. He said that while they enjoyed the victory over the Eagles and acknowledged its importance, the process to move on and get ready for GWS at Giant Stadium next week had begun before they left Perth.

“(To win after two losses was) obviously important, but we try not to ride that emotional wave,” he said. “I think the best groups stick to what they know internally.

“Pendles (Scott Pendlebury) just spoke to us after the win, as he did last week after the loss (to Hawthorn). He said that we should stay level-headed.

“I think thats a strength of this group, to be able to do that. So, were looking forward to next weekend. We travel again and I think we travel well.”

A loss to the Eagles would have pushed Collingwood back among a pack of teams looking for a top-four finish. A win, their 11th, sees them back into second spot, perhaps with a finals position sewn up.

While premierships can be won from the lower half of the top eight, history tells us its a lot easier to win if you finish among the first four.

The biggest threats to Collingwood doing that come in the next fortnight, with games against the Giants and Richmond.

Grundy said that the win over the Eagles will help them going into those games.

“Next week is another opportunity for us to set our season up,” he said. “The season has gone so quickly; the competition is getting so tight.

“So that is why the guys are super pumped tonight (after beating West Coast) to respond, but its all for nothing if we dont continue our processes going into next week.

“Were looking forward to that. Well see how the boys pull up, but this win should bRead More – Source
