Essendon coach John Worsfold said captain Dyson Heppell's foot issue is "genetic" as the club waits on how it will respond to treatment.
"I won't go into it too much because I don't really understand it. I can't even think of the terminology. But he had it in his other foot and had it fixed years ago. And this one may or may not need some [surgical] intervention at some point, it may just be right," Worsfold said Wednesday morning.
"If Hep's fit, he'll come in. I can guarantee you that. How we get him in is up for debate."
Heppell was withdrawn from last Saturday's win over Sydney after he continued to feel discomfort in his foot on Friday. Worsfold said the injury will be have to be managed for the duration of the year.

"It's one of those things you don't know how it's going to respond," he said.
The skipper's performance at the main training session on Wednesday will be crucial in determining whether he will face North Melbourne on Saturday, one Worsfold said the team was "really looking forward to".
In round five, the Bombers pulverised the Roos by 58 points but since Rhyce Shaw has taken over as caretaker coach, the Roos have enjoyed a spike in form, winning four of five matches.
Worsfold said the Dons coming up against a different outift this time.
"The pressure they're putting around the contest certainly looks like it's been a focus for them. I don't think Cunnington could have been any tougher in the last five weeks.
"With Ziebell getting around the ball, he's obviously a strong player as well. But overall they've just seen an increase in pressure around the contest."
A win this week is crucial for Essendon's push for September. But Worsfold stressed it the focus remains the same.
"Every game is critical in this competition. We're excited about it, looking forward to taking on North as part of our big picture stuff of continuing to work to where we want to get to."
Worsfold said defenders Michael Hurley and Cale Hooker would be fit, while David Myers was available for selection after his shock decision to drop himself from the senior side after the five-point loss to Sydney in round eight.
