Cape Town – Mamelodi Sundowns' third choice goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse has been named as back-up to Bruce Bvuma, Darren Keet and Ronwen Williams for Bafana Bafana at AFCON 2019.
Pieterse has seen limited game-time for Sundowns in 2018/19 as he trails behind in the pecking order with Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene ahead of him.
However, coach Stuart Baxter is a firm believer in the abilities of the shot-stopper having used him in goal during their time together with Kaizer Chiefs.
As such, the 27-year-old has been named in Bafana's COSAFA Cup squad who are set to take on Botswana in a quarterfinal on 2 June in the competition.
Baxter said: "We have our three goalkeepers [for AFCON]. If one of those goalkeepers is injured in the preparation, we don't want to go pick up a goalkeeper who is four weeks on the beach and then has to go play an AFCON game.
