United are yet to settle on a precise job description but they want a figure who understands the make-up of the club to assist in the decision-making process at board level.
The club have been looking at a number of former players to fill the role, including Darren Fletcher and Patrice Evra, as they want an appointment that can work with the new technical director to oversee recruitment.
Scholes spent time with Uniteds U19s side after his retirement and enjoyed the day-to-day aspect of coaching.
The 44-year-old has since taken his first managerial job with Oldham but left after a month in charge due to disagreements with the clubs board.
