Revealed: How much Facebook spends to keep Zuckerberg safe

Facebook spent more than $22m (£19.4m) on Mark Zuckerberg's personal security in 2018 – more than double the amount spent the previous year, records have shown.

The Facebook founder, like many other tech chief executives, only takes a base salary of $1 (88p), but his "other" compensation was listed at $22.6m – and almost all spent on his security.

Nearly $20m went directly on security for Mr Zuckerberg and his family in 2018, up from $9m in 2017, whilst the social media giant also spent $2.6m (£2.3m) on private jets for its founder – which it said was also part of his security programme.

Defending the payments, the regulatory filing by Facebook said: "He is synonymous with Facebook and, as a result, negative sentiment regarding our company is directly associated with, and often transferred to, Mr Zuckerberg."

The higher cost of keeping him safe comes alongside a string of scandals for the company, which have put Mr Zuckerberg at risk of abuse and threats.

Facebook came under fire last month when the man accused of the New Zealand mosque attack live-streamed the massacre on Facebook for 29 minutes – without the platform taking it down.
