It was a clean sweep for Cambridge on Sunday as both the men's and women's rowing teams beat Oxford in the annual Varsity boat race on the London Thames.

The Cambridge men held off a late Oxford surge on the home stretch to win in a time of 16 minutes 57 seconds, while the women comfortably won their third successive race in a time of 18 minutes 47 seconds – 17 seconds ahead of Oxford.

James Cracknell, 46, made history aboard the men's Cambridge boat, which crossed the line two seconds ahead of Oxford to make the Olympic champion the oldest person to not only compete in the race but to also win it.

Cambridge had pulled ahead at the start and had a half-length lead at the mile mark despite a clash of oars. They then quickly extended their advantage to four seconds when they passed under the Hammersmith Bridge.
