Michael van Gerwen produced an incredible display to beat Adrian Lewis 4-1 at the PDC World Championship, with the world number one averaging 108 to secure a spot in the quarter-final.

Lewis was excellent even in a heavy defeat, as he averaged over 101, hitting 10 maximums, and only losing 14-10 in legs.

However, it was outrageously good arrows from the Dutchman who averaged over 110 in each of the last three sets and will now play either James Wade or Ryan Joyce in the last eight.

Adrian Lewis made an impressive start to the match, winning the opening leg with a 110 finish, but he wasnt firing with his scoring and quickly found himself behind. MVG was not at his absolute blistering best but was playing more than well enough to win the next three legs and the set pretty comfortably.

Jackpot was throwing everything at the world number one in the second set, but even an average of 107 was not enough to win it. Breaking the Van Gerwen throw remained a step too far for Lewis as MVG claimed the second set 3-2.

Mighty Mike was really hitting his straps now and was threatening to end the match very quickly, winning the first two legs of the third set, but then things started to change. Missed darts at doubles in the next two sets allowed Lewis to win them both, including a huge 107 checkout. Jackpot had the darts in the deciding leg and opened up with back-to-back maximums – he didnt complete the 9-darter, but he won the leg in 10 darts to win the set.

The game suddenly seemed a lot more even and the first two legs of the fourth set were shared, with the crowd now firmly behind Lewis. MVG was still averaging around 105, but he was missing enough to let in Jackpot and the Englishman broke the throw to go ahead in the fourth. He never goes off the boil for long though as Van Gerwen hit an 11-darter to break straight back. Another 11-darter and the set was his. 3-1.

As MVG took that fourth set he was averaging 107.47 and Lewis was crumbling towards defeat averaging 100.8 and checkout out at 61.5%.

The fifth set was sensational, with Lewis battling hard, but MVG was too strong, averaging over 110 to seal a stunning win.
