Manchester United star David De Gea is biding his time over signing a new deal at Old Trafford due to fears about the direction of the club, Metro.co.uk understands.
The Red Devils recently triggered a 12-month extension clause in the Spaniards contract that extends his deal until 2020.
United have been in talks with De Geas camp over a new long-term deal for the last year but have been frustrated by a lack of progress in negotiations.
De Gea has won Uniteds Player of the Year award in four of the last five seasons and, though money is not his motivation, the 28-year-old feels his performances deserve parity with the likes of Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez on the clubs wage bill.
Jose Mourinho is desperate to keep De Gea and Metro.co.uk understands the Spaniard is minded to stay at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, despite talks resuming over an agreement, De Geas camp see little value in concluding negotiations at this point with so much uncertainty hanging over the club.
United are currently sixth in the Premier League and eight points outside the top four. Failure to qualify for the Champions League would impact Uniteds ability to hand De Gea parity alongside the clubs top earners but more crucially could convince the Spaniard his future lies elsewhere.
Mourinhos backroom staff have noted a lack of intensity from De Gea in training and feel his contract situation has contributed to a below-par start to the 18/19 campaign.
De Gea was at fault for Arsenals opener at Old Trafford last week and there is a fear that the protracted contract negotiations are having an adverse effect on his form.
Mourinho has made De Geas future a matter of priority and piled pressure on his board earlier this month by suggesting the club need to match the Spaniards ambition.
He is a world-class player, Mourinho said.
He is the best goalkeeper in the world and, if our ambitions are to be a big club, to be a winning club, you need the best goalkeeper in the world – and you need also some other players the best in the world.
In this case, we have the best goalkeeper in the world and I know that he wants to stay.
I know that his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know that the board wants him to stay and theyre working on that, so hopefully sooner or later they arrive into good conclusions.
