Barcelona are keeping tabs on Vincent Kompanys contractual situation at Manchester City with a view to offering him a deal at the end of the season.
Kompany, 32, is in his 11th season with City after joining from Hamburg in 2008 but is out of contract next June and is yet to sign an extension.
That news has alerted Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde who is open to signing the Belgian international on a free transfer to add depth and experience to his backline.
Although Barcelona are top of La Liga, they have conceded 19 goals in 15 games – nine more than Atletico Madrid and the same number as Real Madrid, who they beat 5-1 in October.
World Cup winner Samuel Umtiti has suffered from injury problems this season and his replacements Clement Lenglet and Thomas Vermaelen, alongside Gerard Pique, have struggled for form.

Kompany, who has enjoyed considerable success with City and is a highly influential figure both on and off the pitch, is willing to evaluate his options before the end of the season.
Nevertheless, talks between Kompany, his representatives and City are understood to have already taken place to extend his stay at the club.
Aymeric Laporte – a former Barcelona target himself – has emerged as Citys first-choice central defender this season with one of Kompany, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi partnering him.
In recent games, Laporte and Stones seem to have emerged as Guardiolas favoured pairing, although Kompany has still made 11 appearances in all competitions.
