Boak steps down as Port Adelaide skipper

Travis Boak has decided to step down as Port Adelaide skipper, opening the way for star midfielder Ollie Wines to take over the captaincy.

The 30-year-old Boak has served in the role for six seasons, leading the club throughout Ken Hinkley's reign as coach with Port Adelaide finishing in the finals in three of those six years.

Boak's decision to remain with the club at the end of 2012 despite offers to return to Geelong, near where he grew up in Torquay, was critical in helping Port Adelaide through a dark period.

Hinkley praised Boak for his selfless decision to step down saying he had created a great environment for his successor.

"Travis always does whats right and what is best for the team, and no matter what, nothing is going to get in the way of Travs ultimate goal, which is team success," Hinkley said.

Boak will wear No.10 in 2019 as Port Adelaide's captain wears the No.1 guernsey as part of the club's tradition.

Hinkley said the club had three or four potential candidates to replace Boak, praising him for setting a good example to those who will follow him.

Wines, who signed a contract extension last season that tied him to the club until 2022, is the most obvious candidate as he has been vice-captain under Boak and has been honest in indicating that he would one day like to captain the club that drafted him at No.7 in the 2012 national draft.

Brad Ebert, Tom Jonas, Hamish Hartlett, Charlie Dixon and Tom Rockliff were also part of the Power's leadership group in 2018.

Port Adelaide had a disappointing end to the season in 2018 losing six of their last seven games of the season to drop from as high as fourth after round 19 to finish 10th.

Peter Ryan joined The Age in 2017 having covered AFL as a senior reporter with AFL Media.
