Plain and simple, since Wisconsin went to a 3-4 defense in 2013, this was the worst Badgers team in terms of getting to the quarterback. Wisconsin had just 18 sacks in 12 regular-season games, an average of 1.5 per game. In UW's first year in the defense, it averaged 1.92 sacks per game, previously the worst mark in the scheme (and perhaps understandable as the Badgers hadn't been recruiting players for a 3-4). In the years since, the Badgers average sacks per game were 2.64, 2.15, 2.43 and 3.0. From 2014-17, Wisconsin had at least one player with 7.5 sacks and in 2013 three had at least four. This season, Andrew Van Ginkel led the team with 4.5, and two of those came in one game (Purdue) and two others against "powerhouses" New Mexico and Illinois. No one else on the Badgers had more than three sacks.
