The Spaniard is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and United want to protect their investment in the 30-year-old by extending his deal.
Mata joined United for £37m in 2014 and has made close to 199 appearances for the Red Devilis.
The midfielder is no longer a regular starter at Old Trafford and is wary that this is likely to be his last big deal of his career.
According to ESPN, Mata wants to stay at United but will wait to speak to foreign clubs in January before committing to a new deal.

Mata is free to speak to clubs overseas from January 1st and United will be keen to get him signed up as soon as possible.
