‘Harsh judge’ Lyon not content despite wicket haul for NSW

Nathan Lyon isn't resting on his laurels and will next week fly to Western Australia for a final Sheffield Shield hit-out in preparation for a taxing summer of Test cricket.

Lyon took nine wickets for the match – including a second-innings five-wicket haul – to spark NSW to a 163-run Shield win over Queensland at Canberra's Manuka Oval.

While the pitch was flat and offered little for the bowlers on the opening three days, Lyon skilfully exploited several cracks on the closing day to take 5-94 in the Bulls' second dig.

Despite returning match figures of 9-177, Lyon said he wasn't satisfied with himself two-and-a-half weeks out from the opening Test against India in Adelaide.

"I'm a harsh judge on myself, I wasn't too impressed with it," Lyon said. "Some days you don't bowl so well and you take some wickets.

"I'm very confident of the way the ball's coming out of the hand at the moment. It's coming out very nicely.

"It wasn't as consistent as what I would like. But there's plenty of time to get back in the nets to do a little bit of work."

With the Australian batting order in flux due to Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft's bans, Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins will carry a big load against an Indian side bullish about its prospects of knocking over the hosts on home soil.

Lyon will now travel to Perth where he'll take part in the November 27-30 Shield clash with Western Australia at Perth Stadium as a warm-up.

Cricket Australia couldn't confirm if Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins would also turn out for NSW in Perth, saying the trio would be monitored following the match against Queensland.
