Margaret River region swimmers jump into new season

Swimmers of the Capes region are preparing for the start of the open water swimming season as it draws near, with many exciting events planned within the region, kicking off with the Augusta Adventure Festival on November 3-4, followed by the WA Swimming Open Water Swim Series in Busselton on November 18.

Entries are still open for both of the above events however swimmers are being urged to sign up soon, after entries for the flagship swimming event of the region, the Busselton Jetty Swim in February sold out in under 24 hours.

“I was in a different time zone when Jetty swim entries opened,” said Swimming Women coach Charlotte OBeirne.

“I stayed up late to enter and when I woke up entries were almost sold out. Its so exciting to have so many people wanting to swim.”

Led by Ms OBeirne, Swimming Women organises the Margaret River Ocean swim, (January 19), which she said was a fantastic open water event for those new to swimming, particularly in open waters.

“Its all about participation, having a go with your family and friends and encouraging each other to try, whether you are wearing flippers, a wetsuit or are a seasoned open water swimmer,” she said.

If you currently cannot swim, or can swim but would like to improve, Swimming Women is running 6 week swimming FUNdamentals courses starting 22, 25 and 26 October at Geographe Leisure Centre and Margaret River Recreation Centre.

Ms OBeirne said the courses were the perfect opportunity for locals to get themselves swimming this summer.

“There will be over fifty Swimming Women, Swim Men and Swim Girls taking part in this years Busselton Jetty Swim.

“Many of those people couldnt swim at all before they joined Swimming Women and they are now swimming almost every day.

“There are also other great swimming groups around the region, so there is no excuse not to jump in!”

If you would like to start swimming there are still places left in the Swimming Women courses, sign up online at www.swimmingwomen.com.au or call Charlotte OBeirne on 0447 698 822.

There will also be Introduction to Open Water Swimming Courses later in the year.
