Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp hailed Ross Barkley for his performance during Englands 3-2 win over Spain in Seville – and believe he can be the missing link for Gareth Southgates side going forward.
The Chelsea midfielder played a brilliant ball over the top to find Harry Kane who laid it on a plate for Raheem Sterling to tap in Englands third as he pulled the strings in the centre of the park.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher was impressed with the former Everton man, who has not had things all his way over the past few years.
Im pleased for Ross Barkley tonight, Carragher told Sky Sports.
Even on the back of Croatia – hes started really well at Chelsea – people were still looking at the Croatia game and saying “did he bring enough? Did he do enough?” It was a difficult game to play in.

He was involved in one of the goals but he also played really well tonight. Hes had an up and down couple of years – criticism leaving Everton, didnt quite happen at Chelsea, injuries as well… theres no doubt that lad has got talent.
If he can put it all together with his decision making going forward, he could be that creative player, that we said on the back of the World Cup, that England still lacked.
Carraghers former Liverpool team-mate Redknapp agreed with his assessment and believes new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is having a huge influence on the 24-year-old.
Redknapp added: You can see hes got that sparkle in his eye again. I think hes learning a lot about the game under Sarri. I think hes developing. Its confidence, its belief.
The belief this has got to give these young players. I think about the two midfield players: youve got Harry Winks and Ross Barkley and Im thinking to myself before the game, “theyve not had a lot of minutes in the Premier League, a couple of Champions League games.” I couldnt wait to see how theyd do today.
Both of them were fantastic in there. They were different class, the way they held the ball up, the way they passed it.
Harry Winks was even involved in one or two altercations with the Spanish players – he didnt care, he showed no respect for them, which I think is what youve got to do.
