The 2017-18 Championship season was as exciting as ever with six former Premier League clubs reaching the play-offs vying for a return to the big time.

Only five of the 24 Championship sides had never performed in the Premier League before – Preston, Millwall, Brentford, Bristol City and Burton Albion – so competition was fierce.

Including pre-season there were 19 managerial changes in the division from Alan Irvine leaving Norwich in May to Chris Coleman being sacked by Sunderland the following April.

But which teams escaped the second flight and returned to the promised land of the Premier League?

Who won the Championship?

Wolverhampton Wanderers won the Championship for the second time since its re-branding in 2004.

They picked up 99 points from their 46 games, which was the most of any team in the division since Leicester managed 102 in 2013-14 and the fourth most since 2004.

Who else got automatic promotion?

Cardiff City caused a huge surprise by finishing second in the Championship in the 2017-18 season.

Neil Warnocks side were not expected to achieve a great deal last season but they occupied the automatic promotion places for much of it.

Between matchdays 32 and 46 the Bluebirds only dropped out of the top two for one matchday after back-to-back losses to Wolves and Aston Villa, immediately returning by beating Norwich next time out.

What were the results in the play-offs?

Fulham won the play-offs, beating Aston Villa 1-0 in the final at Wembley thanks to a Tom Cairney goal.

In the semi-finals Fulham bounced back from a 1-0 defeat at Derby to beat them 2-0 at Craven Cottage and progress.

Villa had beaten Middlesbrough 1-0 in the away leg of their semi-final before a goalless draw at home.
