Some correct decisions came about as a result of the Video Assistant Referee, whilst it caused more controversy than it quelled in other cases.
Regardless of how the technology performed at the World Cup, however, the Premier League had already made up its collective mind on whether to use VAR in the coming season.
So will we be seeing VAR in English football?
Not in the Premier League next season, we wont.
The 20 Premier League clubs voted in April on whether VAR should be brought in for the 2018/19 season and a two thirds majority voted to defer its implementation.
The Premier League said in a statement: The decision came after comprehensive discussions regarding the progress made in VAR trials in English football and key learnings from the many competitions elsewhere using it.
The clubs agreed that advanced testing will continue to the end of season 2018/19 to make further improvements to the system, especially around communication inside the stadium and for those following at home and around the world.

The Premier League will also be asking for VAR to be used more extensively in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in season 2018/19.
So it is not the end of VAR on these shores, we can certainly expect to see it used in the cup competitions, just not in the Premier League.
However, Premier League executive chairman Richard Scudamore told BBC Radio 5 Live in May: The technology has worked and the officials have generally done very well with it.
Its inevitable that [VAR] is going to come in, a lot of things will have to go backwards for it not to happen.
So it could only be a matter of time until it does arrive in the top tier of English football.
