British top seeds Kyle Edmund and Johanna Konta have both booked their place in the second round of Wimbledon with straight sets victories.

Edmund, who has replaced the injured Andy Murray as Britains No.1, kick-started his campaign in SW19 with a 6-2 6-3 7-5 victory over the Australian Alex Bolt.

Konta, meanwhile, defeated Natalia Vikhlyantseva 7-5 7-6 (9-7) as she looks to repeat her fine run to the semi-finals last year.

Ahead of Wimbledon, Edmund secured a morale-boosting victory over his friend and mentor Murray, who withdrew himself from this tournament because of fitness concerns.

He stamped his authority on his first round encounter with Bolt from the outset, clinching an early break on his way to dominating the opener 6-2.

It was a similar story in the second, with Edmund, looking to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the first time, proving too strong for Bolt.

The world number 115 improved in the third but wasted a chance to serve for the set and was broken again as Edmund wrapped up an impressive win.

Edmund, who will meet Japanese star Yuichi Sugita in the second round, said: Im really happy to get through. To get that out of the way is great.

It was a tricky third set but it shows how well I was playing and thinking to come back there.

Konta is also safely through despite making hard work of her opening game at the All England Club against Vikhlyantseva.

The 27-year-old was a set and a break up but was pegged back and needed six match points to finally secure the victory.

Konta, who faces Slovakias Dominica Cibulkova next, said: Its the first round of a Slam – there were definitely some nerves there.

First rounds are always tricky. The conditions were tricky, breezy and gusty, it didnt make it easy.

I am playing these Championships independent of what happened last year. I am a littler wiser this year, working hard to be here for a full two weeks.
