Federal authorities charged a 26-year-old Florida man Tuesday for allegedly leaving voicemails with a local mosque in which he threatened to bomb them.
Dustin Allen Hughes allegedly started leaving profanity-laden, threatening voicemails with Jamaet Ul Muttaqueen Mosque of Pembroke Pines, Fla., on May 5 and claimed in one of them to have left a bomb at the mosque, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. Federal agents arrested Hughes on Tuesday and said that he faces up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted of “willfully making a bomb threat by telephone,” according to The Associated Press. “I planted a bomb in your temple, Im gonna blow your f****** temple up you f****** Muslim … Where you guys have your sanctuary and worship Allah, Im gonna blow that mother f***** up,” the initial voicemail said, among other things, according to DOJ. “I have a detonator [that Hughes stated he was going to activate] … [Y]ou guys are all gonna be up in flames after Im done with you!”
Staff at the mosque immediately called police upon receiving the voicemails. The police found no evidence of explosive devices at the mosque. Federal prosecutors said that FBI agents played the voicemail back to Hughes during a post-arrest interview and that he confessed to leaving it along with other voicemails of a similar, threatening nature.
Hughes allegedly said that he left the voicemails to make the congregants of the mosque “scared and upset.”
