Petra Kvitova was delighted to move beyond Serena Williams and Simona Halep as the most successful woman to compete at the Madrid Open but she was forced to withdraw from the Italian Open.
The Czech was clearly knackered at the end of what has been two weeks of consecutive play in Prague and Madrid as she added her third and fourth titles to a remarkable start to the season.
Kvitova beat Kiki Bertens in a dramatic final that lasted two hours and 52 minutes and she put every ounce of energy on the line to secure a record third title.
And she was incredibly proud of her efforts, despite feeling fatigued.
It feels sweet and weird as well, she said after the 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 6-3 win. I didnt really expect that, even the same time last year.
Even coming from the Prague last week, I didnt think I could be in the final, winning the trophy back-to-back.

My body is very exhausted, as well, so… Im pretty surprised that the body just handle it somehow.
Well, every title feels great. Winning three times here in Madrid, it means something. Its not really happening every day, so Im very proud of myself.

Kvitova was due to face British No. 1 Johanna Konta in Rome but will now rest before the French Open.
Bertens, meanwhile, was emotional about the defeat but is sure shell look back on the match with great pride.
I think I can be really proud of myself, like seeing myself where Im coming from, just playing today in this final, playing tennis like the level I played today I think was quite okay for such a big final, she said while tearing up. I think I made pretty big steps in that.
Of course, it really hurts right now. I think you can see that.
Maybe already tomorrow or next week or in a few weeks I can really look back on a great week and know Im on the right way.
