Nicaragua riots: Police free detained students and lecturers

Nicaraguan police have released dozens of students and lecturers arrested in protests triggered by planned changes to the social security system.

Some students said they had been beaten and tortured by police while in custody. The claims could not be independently verified.

Images on social media showed some, visibly distressed and with their heads shaved, as they were released.

At least 25 people are reported to have died in days of violent protests.

The unrest started last Wednesday when hundreds of people, mainly pensioners, took to the streets of the capital, Managua, to protest against changes to the country's social security system.

Protesters and some journalists covering the demonstration were set upon by men wearing motorcycle helmets who beat them with metal pipes and electric cables.

In the outcry that followed, Nicaraguan leader Daniel Ortega scrapped the changes. He ordered the release of those detained and lifted a broadcast ban on a private news channel.

However, the country remains tense and more protests are expected.

Mr Ortega has blamed right-wing agitators for much of the violence, saying they have infiltrated the protests in order to discredit his left-wing government.

But the US said on Tuesday that it held the government responsible for the bloodshed.

"The repugnant political violence by police and pro-government thugs against the people of Nicaragua, particularly university students, has shocked the democratic international community," a White House statement said.

The UN human rights office in Geneva has called for an investigation.
