Manchester City’s charge towards the Premier League title continued with a dominant 1-0 win over Newcastle United, with Pep Guardiola‘s team now a remarkable 15 points clear of second-placed Manchester City after only 20 games.
Raheem Sterling scored the only goal of a match that City bossed from start to finish as Rafa Benitez’s side adopted a defensive approach, with Sergio Aguero particularly guilty of wasting some big chances.
Although Newcastle had some opportunities to level things up, City notched up their 18th consecutive league victory – a Premier League record – but they also matched another record in the competition’s history.

City won their 11th straight away game – a feat only matched by the Chelsea team of 2008/09.
A 0-0 draw against Everton ended that fine run for the Blues, but City will now be able to move beyond their total if they beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on New Year’s Eve.
While Chelsea only finished third that season, it would be a major surprise for City to not get the job done.
Sterling’s goal – a well taken volley after an exquisite ball from Kevin De Bruyne – was his 13th league strike of the campaign, leaving him behind only Harry Kane (18) and Mohamed Salah (15) in the Premier League standings.
Sterling said after the match: ‘They soaked up the pressure really well and tried to counter-attack really well, but we put press on ourselves at times and it did not make it easy. We showed team spirit, stayed calm and got the win.
‘We have got quite a few that can find the pass, these players can see a pass, you just have to make the run. It was a great team performance today and a great ball from Kevin de Bruyne for the goal.
‘We need to keep winning and getting three points – that is most important thing.’
