Once upon a time, Facebook users loved nothing more than getting a ‘poke’ from their friends.

Now Facebook is planning to breathe new life into this old-school social media salutation with five ‘Greetings’ offering users several ways to say hello.

From this week, Facebookers in the UK won’t just be limited to the ability to ‘poke’ their mates.

Instead, they will be able to easily reach out on Facebook by waving hello, high-fiving, hugging or winking too.

The new Greetings feature has been introduced to mark the 10th anniversary of poking, which was one of the features which made Facebook famous back in its early days.

How to use the new Facebook Greetings feature

Back in the early days of Facebook, you could press the poke button to send your friends a little notification.

Now, the neglected art of poking is a lot more impressive.

To send someone a greeting all you need to do is visit their profile on Facebook and find the ‘hello’ button under their profile picture.

On mobile, you need to hold down the hello button, whilst on desktop you just hover over it.

You can then choose from five different greeting options.

The action you choose will result in a cool animation being shown on their page.

If you hug someone, two blue hands will wrap around their profile picture and give it a cuddle.

A poke will see a blue hand jolt their picture and a wink will summon a sweet winky face.

If you sent a greeting to someone by accident, you can cancel it by tapping once on the hello button. A pop-up will then ask if you want to change your mind.

Since the feature is only being tested in the UK, Australia, Canada, Columbia, France and Thailand you can only send greetings to other Facebook users in those countries.

However, it’s likely the new feature will be rolled out across the rest of the world in the coming months.
