Manchester United legend Paul Scholes labelled Romelu Lukaku ‘reckless and stupid’ after the striker kicked out at Gaetan Borg in the side’s 1-0 defeat of Brighton.

There were fears from United that Lukaku could receive a suspension, which would have ruled him out of Tuesday night’s trip to Watford, but the Belgian avoided any punishment following the incident.

Despite Lukaku escaping a ban, Scholes ripped into the forward in the moments leading up to kick-off at Vicarage Park.

Asked about the incident, BT Sport pundit Scholes said: ‘Lukaku knows he has done well there and knows he’s lucky not to get any action against him.

‘It’s reckless and stupid and probably deserves to be sent off.’

Former referee Dermot Gallagher believed Lukaku’s ‘petulant’ kick was not worthy of retrospective punishment.

‘The act has to be one of violence or brutality,’ he explained to Sky Sports earlier this week.
