Image-messaging app Snapchat experienced a global outage last night, prompting users to vent frustration on Twitter and other social networks.

The glitch was badly timed for Snapchat's tech company parent Snap Inc, which is set to report its third quarter earnings today.

Many users said they were unable to log in or connect when trying to use the app.

A Snapchat support page on Twitter said the company was aware of the issue and working on it, and advised users to stay logged in. No further detail was provided on what the technical problem was.

Users flooded Twitter with posts about the outage, meaning #Snapachatdown was still trending in the UK this morning with approximately 135,000 tweets complaining of the problem.

The company was also forced to deny a rumour started by a prank website that its famous app would be shutting down at the end of this year.

The most recent figures put Snapchat's daily user numbers at more than 173m, with this expected to rise significantly in new data issued today.

The app is also being used in the push for original content on digital platforms to compete with Netflix, after signing a new venture with NBCUniversal.
