With the year-end world No. 1 spot up for grabs, there’s plenty on the line and, incredibly, seven of the eight stars on show can top the rankings come the end of the week.
Four of those players were in action on Day 1, with Pliskova, Venus Williams, Muguruza and Jelena Ostapenko all on show in the White Group.
Pliskova made a strong start to life under new coach Rennae Stubs by destroying Williams 6-2 6-2 in just 72 minutes.

The Czech hit an impressive 25 winners on her way to victory and admitted she was delighted with her start.
‘I think my serve was pretty good today but the scoreline makes it look easier than it was,’ she said after the win.

‘There are no easy matches in Singapore so you have to be ready from the first point. That’s what I was trying to do today and it worked.’
Soon after, the only two 2017 Grand Slam winners competing in Singapore – Muguruza and Ostapenko – did battle, with Wimbledon champion Muguruza downing the 20-year-old.
